As a child growing up in the 90s during the very first generation of Game Freak’s Pokemon series, the 1999 on-rails photography game Pokemon Snap from HAL Laboratory and Pax Softnica for the Nintendo 64 is incredibly nostalgic for me. Even though I cannot picture myself doing so nowadays, I spent many dozens of hours grinding my high scores up and up, experimenting with different techniques to take that perfect shot. As a photographer nowadays, I could argue my passion stemmed in-part from my experiences with the game.
While some Nintendo consoles have received virtual console editions of Pokemon Snap, surely fans are overdue for a sequel two decades later… right?
During the Pokemon Presents conference earlier today, The Pokemon Company confirmed that work was ongoing on New Pokemon Snap, a fully-fledged sequel to the original Nintendo 64 game. Currently in-development exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, this game will feature similar photography mechanics but a wider-range of Pokemon across all generations and more detailed, expansive environments compared to its predecessor.
Aside from the preview trailer above, we received very little information about the game. But, I would expect to hear more about New Pokemon Snap in the coming months.
