2K and Firaxis Games have released their next major free update for Sid Meier’s Civilization VII. Titled Test of Time, this update introduces arguably the most significant structural shifts to the game since its launch.
A primary addition is the introduction of Time-Tested Civs, a feature that allows players to guide a single civilisation through an entire campaign. This changes the standard gameplay loop where empires were previously expected to evolve during Age Transitions, though that evolution path remains available as an option. To support this, a new Syncretism mechanic allows players to adopt unique units or infrastructure from rival civilisations currently in their Apex Age. Alternatively, players can select the Affirmation option to further reinforce the distinct traits of their chosen civilisation.
The progression and win conditions have also been restructured. The previous Legacy Paths have been completely removed and replaced by the Triumphs system, which provides optional, specialised challenges tied to six distinct attributes: Militaristic, Cultural, Scientific, Economic, Diplomatic, and Expansionist. Furthermore, the overall Victories system has been redesigned to reward continuous dominance throughout a match, providing players with more varied strategic paths to achieve a win.
In addition to these structural overhauls, the update introduces a variety of content additions and features. Players gain access to Alexander the Great as a new free leader, alongside a new Fractal Continent map shape and refreshed map generation systems. The interface now includes a dedicated Commerce screen and an Advisor Council. Rounding out the patch are new narrative events, updates to biomes and specialists, fresh audio and music tracks, and various balance adjustments.
The update is live now across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PC, Mac and Linux.
