Nippon Ichi Software America (NIS America) has announced a new title in their line-up, Village in the Shade, which is scheduled to arrive in the later months of 2026 on the PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and the Nintendo Switch 2. Known in Japan as Honogurashi no Niwa, this is a new simulation game IP which is being developed directly by NIS America’s parent company – Nippon Ichi Software.
Set within a secluded mountain town called Kagatsu, the game is a farming simulator boasting a hand painted art style, that focuses on homestead management. Players are tasked with planting crops and building their own farms while interacting with a variety of local characters. The experience is designed to be relaxing, offering activities such as watching cherry blossoms with neighbours, walking through the town, or resting by the local brook.
While the setting appears peaceful, the narrative contains a mystery element centered around a specific set of rules. Residents are advised to avoid talking to strangers, stay within the village boundaries, and remain indoors throughout the night. Players can choose to adhere to these local customs for a quiet life or venture out to discover the truth behind the village at their own risk.
Gameplay aims to offer players an extensive customisation system where furniture can be purchased to decorate the player’s home. Resources found throughout the farm can also be used to craft various items, such as fences. Social life is a significant component of the game, with traditional Japanese activities like summer festivals and seasonal viewings providing opportunities for players to build relationships with their neighbours.
