Square Enix has released a playable demo for Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, giving players an early opportunity to experience the upcoming remake of the 2000 title, Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past.
The demo is currently available across all planned platforms for the game. This includes the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store.
The trial version covers the opening segment of the RPG, covering multiple hours of gameplay. Square Enix has also confirmed that progress made within the demo is not limited to the trial. Players will be able to transfer their save data to the full game when it launches on 5 February 2026. Additionally, those who play the full release using save data from the demo will receive a specific in-game bonus. This takes the form of the “Day Off Dress,” a cosmetic outfit for the party member Maribel.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined updates the original PlayStation release with a new visual direction (Thus the Reimagined title). The game features a hand-crafted 3D art style and environments inspired by dioramas, while retaining the classic character designs of Akira Toriyama. The narrative follows a young hero and his friends who are transported back in time via ancient stone tablets to restore lands that have been sealed away.
Beyond the visual overhaul, the remake includes several adjustments to gameplay systems. The narrative flow has been streamlined, and the battle system has been updated with new mechanics. Key additions include “Moonlighting,” a feature allowing characters to utilise two vocations simultaneously, and a “Let Loose” ability. A new vocation known as the “Monster Master” has also been added, allowing players to summon monsters during combat.
