Solo developer Last Dissent has released DRINK HUMAN BEANS, a new title that seeks to blend satire with psychological horror – bundled together with elements of a walking simulator. The game is now available for purchase on PC via Steam.
The narrative is set within a dystopian apartment owned by the entity Y.AI Corp. Players assume the role of an unnamed applicant who finds themselves trapped within a simulated job application process that utilises blackmail and murder to measure performance. What initially appears to be a routine day involving coffee deliveries and standard interactions shifts into a scenario where a smart coffee machine assesses the player’s worth and the environment actively manipulates their actions.
Gameplay seeks to balance obedience and rebellion. Players must navigate a world where a smartphone controls essential functions ranging from communication to survival. While the simulation encourages compliance, the game features hidden systems and secret pathways that are revealed through disobedience. The title includes multiple endings determined by which rules the player chooses to break, rather than the instructions they follow.
Last Dissent describes the combat mechanics as a “walking simulator with a gun,” where the use of violence serves to increase player guilt.
The project draws thematic inspiration from works by Philip K. Dick and Jean Baudrillard, as well as real-world concepts like The Stanford Prison Experiment and the film The Matrix. It aims to critique modern capitalism and digital conformity through dark satire.
