Bandai Namco Entertainment has officially announced Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, marking the return of the mainline flight shooting franchise after a seven-year hiatus. Developed by Bandai Namco Aces Inc., the upcoming title is scheduled for release in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
The announcement was accompanied by a trailer offering a first look at the game’s visuals. The developers have confirmed that the title utilises Unreal Engine 5 alongside proprietary technology to render fighter jets, cloud formations, and terrain. The game will also feature inclement weather conditions that players must navigate during flight. Additionally, the studio noted the inclusion of first-person cinematics intended to increase immersion.
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve returns the series to the fictitious ‘Strangereal’ universe. The Campaign Mode places players in the cockpit as a pilot for the Federation of Central Usea (FCU). The narrative premise establishes that the FCU has been occupied and its navy shattered by the Republic of Sotoa. The protagonist takes on the mantle of the “Wings of Theve,” a title referencing the FCU capital city. Joined by three new fighter pilots, the player is tasked with reclaiming their homeland and eliminating the opposing threat.
While the primary focus of the reveal was the single-player narrative and visual fidelity, Bandai Namco confirmed that multiplayer modes are in development. These modes will allow for aerial combat against other players, though specific details regarding the online components will be shared at a later date.
