Following seasons in Melbourne and Adelaide, Willy Russell’s one woman comedy Shirley Valentine arrives in Sydney next week. The production will play Theatre Royal Sydney from 22 to 26 October for a strictly limited run, with Natalie Bassingthwaighte returning to the title role. Afterwards, the tour then heads to Brisbane for a limited engagement at Twelfth Night Theatre, Bowen Hills, from 29 October to 8 November.
Bassingthwaighte brings a cross screen and stage résumé that includes Elvis, Neighbours, Underbelly, X Factor, Chicago and Jagged Little Pill. The Australian production is also being directed by Lee Lewis, and produced by Woodward Productions.
The story follows Shirley, a middle aged Liverpool housewife who talks to her kitchen wall while wondering where her adventurous younger self went. A spontaneous invitation to Greece prompts a life changing decision, with the play balancing sharp humour and heart as Shirley tests the limits of routine and rediscovers her independence.
