Unveiled during the Xbox Games Showcase 2025, Keeper is the latest project from Double Fine Productions and creative lead Lee Petty. The third-person atmospheric adventure is set for release on 17 October 2025 across Xbox Series X|S, PC via Xbox and Steam, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and as a day-one Game Pass title. It will also support Xbox Play Anywhere functionality, allowing shared progress across platforms.
Keeper introduces players to a surreal post-human world, where the remnants of humanity have long since vanished. At its heart is a mysterious Lighthouse – ancient, dormant, and forgotten – until it suddenly stirs to life. In a striking visual sequence shown in the debut trailer, the structure collapses into rubble, only to reassemble itself on newly formed legs. Now sentient and mobile, the Lighthouse begins a journey toward the island’s distant mountainous centre, guided by a newfound sense of purpose.
With no dialogue throughout the game, Keeper is a wordless narrative driven by its environment, tone, and visual storytelling. Along the way, the Lighthouse encounters a spirited seabird who becomes both companion and ally. While the Lighthouse wields a radiant beam of light capable of affecting the surrounding world and repelling a creeping malevolent force, the bird interacts with ancient mechanisms to aid their passage.
The game emphasises atmosphere and emotional tone over clearly defined mechanics, a deliberate choice by Petty. Known for his work on Brütal Legend, Stacking, Headlander, RAD, and Psychonauts 2, Petty approached Keeper without a traditional gameplay hook. Instead, the game evolved organically through exploration of themes like isolation, companionship, and transformation – many influenced by the global pandemic in 2020.
