A few days ago, The Pokémon Company hosted a Pokémon Presents video presentation to mark Pokémon Day, the anniversary of the original Pokémon video games’ release in 1996. The presentation shared updates on upcoming titles and projects, including new information on Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the reveal of Pokémon Champions, news from Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, upcoming expansions to the Pokémon Trading Card Game, and the return of Pokémon Concierge.
Kenji Okubo, president of The Pokémon Company International, commented on the announcements, stating:
Pokémon continues to capture the imaginations of longtime fans and new, and Pokémon Day reveals for 2025 and beyond are our way of celebrating with them by continuing to deliver the joy of Pokémon to Trainers around the world. In addition to the reveal of Pokémon Champions and new introductions to the popular Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket app, we’re looking forward to a ‘Mega’ year as we prepare for the launch of the Pokémon Legends: Z-A video game featuring the mechanic, as well as the introduction of Mega Evolution Pokémon ex to the best-selling Pokémon TCG. We wish a happy Pokémon Day to all!
For ease of access, please find a summary of all announcements made below:
Pokémon Champions
Developed by The Pokémon Works in collaboration with Game Freak, Pokémon Champions will allow players to engage in core game-style battles with Trainers from around the world. The game will also support compatibility with Pokémon HOME, enabling players to use Pokémon from previous titles alongside those obtained in Pokémon Champions.
The game is set to release on both the Nintendo Switch family of systems and mobile devices, with further details to be shared in future updates.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Scheduled for release in late 2025, Pokémon Legends: Z-A takes place in Lumiose City, which is undergoing an urban redevelopment project designed to create a space shared by people and Pokémon. Players will select one of three partner Pokémon—Chikorita, Tepig, or Totodile (Sadly for those who enjoyed the second generation of Pokemon with Cyndaquil, the fire-starter isn’t featured in this game) and explore both the city and nearby wild zones.
Gameplay will feature real-time battles, with Trainers and Pokémon moving freely and executing actions without the traditional turn-based system. Players will need to carefully manage move timing, area of effect, and Pokémon swaps to succeed in battle.
Players will stay at Hotel Z, operated by AZ and his partner Pokémon, Eternal Flower Floette. The hotel serves as a base for various story events and interactions with new characters, such as Urbain and Taunie. The game will also incorporate Mega Evolution, allowing certain Pokémon to undergo this transformation during battles.
