Publisher 663 Games has announced the upcoming release of the action roguelite game Realm of Ink on Steam Early Access, set to go live on 17 May 2024. The game, which is still under development by Leap Studio, is set to have its full PC release and be available on consoles later in 2024.
Realm of Ink aims to be distinguished by its unique 2.5D Chinese-style ink painting aesthetic combined with modern art influences. The game sets out to provide players with a rich combat system that allows players to handle multiple unique characters (the first of which, will be available when the Early Access build goes live). It delves into a philosophical narrative exploring themes of nihilism and existentialism.
In an accompanying gameplay trailer (above), players were introduced to a new boss, the Animitta Asura—a half-man, half-Buddha mechanical monk, who is one of the guardians within the desolate manuscript ruins of Animitta Mountain.
Dai, the CEO of Leap Studio, expressed enthusiasm about the game’s entry into Early Access, sharing:
We are incredibly excited to be releasing Realm of Ink onto Steam Early Access and taking the next step on our development journey. While we aim for a flawless official launch, as a newly established independent game studio, we acknowledge that our experience and resources are still growing. We recognize that only by relying on genuine feedback and suggestions from players can we continuously refine our product and deliver the best gaming experience possible.
The initial Early Access release of Realm of Ink aims to offer the following content:
- Four complete acts and eight boss fights.
- The character “Red the Swordswoman” as the first playable option, equipped with three weapons.
- Gameplay involving 20 Ink Gem skills across four tiers.
- Fifteen Ink Pets, providing over 40 forms across four tiers.
- More than 150 Perks to support diverse gameplay strategies.
- Approximately 30% of the game’s storyline and a first glimpse at its world-building.
- An Endless mode for those seeking additional challenges.
Leap Studio is planning to provide frequent updates and optimizations during the Early Access phase, based on a detailed development roadmap. Future updates are expected to introduce additional characters, expanded weapon options, new gameplay mechanics for Ink Pets, and additional bosses.
