Square Enix Announces Early February 2024 Launch Date for PlayStation Exclusive Party Shooter, Foamstars

Seemingly hoping to get a slice of that casual family-friendly shooter market primarily dominated by Nintendo’s Splatoon, Square Enix has confirmed their online 4v4 team party shooter Foamstars will be releasing exclusively on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 gaming platforms starting 6 February 2024. Taking a similar route to that taken of Fall Guys, another beloved party and community-driven game when it first launched, Foamstars will be available as part of the PlayStation Plus monthly game line-up from launch until 4 March 2024. During this period, subscribers can redeem, download and play Foamstars at no additional cost. As always, post-redemption, the game will remain accessible in player’s libraries provided they maintain an active subscription.

During the first month of launch, Foamstars will only be available via the aforementioned method. Starting 5 March 2024, the game will be available to purchase via the PlayStation Store, but still requiring a PlayStation plus subscription to play online.

Square Enix is aiming to offer offer an engaging and evolving gameplay experience, with free themed seasonal updates planned for a year. These updates promise a variety of fresh content, including new cosmetics, playable characters, maps, and game modes. Each season also introduces an optional Premium Season Pass, available for an additional fee. Purchasers of the Premium Season Pass will gain immediate access to exclusive Season Pass characters and can acquire additional season-specific cosmetics.

At its launch, Foamstars will feature three player-versus-player (PvP) multiplayer modes: Smash the Star, Happy Bath Survival, and the recently unveiled Rubber Duck Party. Each mode is supported by three meticulously designed maps that enhance the gaming experience by offering unique, enjoyable, and strategic gameplay dynamics. To maintain an element of surprise and challenge, maps are selected randomly for each match.

In addition to multiplayer modes, Foamstars introduces PvE (player versus environment) elements through Foamstar and Squad Missions. These solo and team-based challenges involve safeguarding Bath Vegas against various randomized encounters. Missions provide an opportunity for players to explore the lore of Foamstars athletes, refine their gaming skills, and enjoy cooperative gameplay, ultimately preparing them for competitive PvP encounters.

Furthermore, Foamstars will incorporate a range of in-game Challenges, rewarding players who complete these tasks with exciting prizes. These rewards include unlocking new playable characters and gaining substantial experience bonuses for Season Pass progression.

The big question though is will Foamstars thrive as a live service game, or will it join the growing wasteland of such online-oriented games that have ended far too soon. Time will tell.
