Offering a fresh retake of their classic 1998 sci-fi role-playing game, Square Enix has this weekend released Star Ocean: The Second Story R onto the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC worldwide. This updated version of the game seeks to keep the same elements that made the original late-90s game a classic, but offer both long-time enthusiasts and newcomers a visually enhanced and audio-rich experience, complete with a reworked soundtrack and modernised gameplay features.
Producer Kei Komaki expressed excitement over the game’s reception, noting the global anticipation from fans during the development process:
When we first announced the game, the fan response we heard from around the world was incredibly exciting. Throughout the development of STAR OCEAN THE SECOND STORY R, we often found new ways to appreciate the original game, and seeing others share that passion with us was amazing. Now that the game has launched, we are thrilled that players will be able to see our full vision – a reimagining made for fans new and old.
The game’s narrative centers on Claude, a Federation officer who finds himself on an alien planet and crosses paths with Rena, a local girl destined to fulfil an ancient prophecy. Players have the choice to start their adventure as either Claude or Rena, which influences the unfolding story and the allies they encounter. The decision also adds a layer of replayability, encouraging players to explore the game from both perspectives.
Star Ocean The Second Story R sets out to offer an engaging experience with its fast-paced real-time combat, intricate skill system, and Private Actions that deepen character interactions. These features not only enhance the gameplay but also offer players various narrative outcomes. Both English and Japanese language options are available with regards to both voice-overs and subtitles, while other language options will include French, Italian, German, and Spanish subtitles available through a subsequent software update.
