Slim Version PlayStation 5 Arrives in Australia on 6th December

Sony Interactive Entertainment Australia has confirmed that the redesigned ‘slim’ version of the PlayStation 5 will be available in Australia starting Wednesday 6 December 2023, with pre-orders commencing from today. The apparent major difference of this unit compared to the launch model that has been available since 2020 is its form factor, with both Disc and Digital models available to purchase. However for those with a Digital model who decide they want to later upgrade to use discs (which in this authors opinion, you should), a separate ‘Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive’ will also be available to purchase.

According to Sony Interactive Entertainment:

The new form factor addresses the evolving needs of players, providing greater choice and flexibility. The same technology features that make PS5 the best to play are packed into a smaller form factor, along with an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for more internal storage.

The new PS5 has been reduced in volume by more than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24% compared to the previous models. There are four separate cover panels, with the top portion in a glossy look, while the bottom remains in matte. If you purchase the PS5 Digital Edition, you can add the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for PS5 later, as it will also be sold separately for $159.95 AUD.

For those who are still looking to nab themselves an original version of the PlayStation 5, they will be available for the time being while stocks last. However, it is expected to be phased out over time, with the new Slim model being the only unit available to purchase.

In terms of pricing, the PlayStation 5 Slim Disc model will be available for $799.95, with the digital-only model being slightly cheaper at $679.95. This does mean that digital model owners who wish to upgrade and purchase the $159.95 add-on, will be out a few more dollars. Outside of the base peripheral, a new vertical stand compatible with all models will be available for $49.95, while new console cover colours for the model are also in the works for early 2024 – with some confirmed colours including an all-matte Black colourway and the Deep Earth Collection colours in Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver.

For those interested, detailed specs on both Disc and Digital-only units are available below:
