Tomorrow will mark six years since Studio MDHR’s side-scrolling action-platformer Cuphead first released on Xbox platforms. What started as a humble but incredibly challenging game that was a love-letter to the earliest era of cartoons has since spawned into a multi-platform release, a recently released DLC expansion, a multi-season animated cartoon on Netflix and much, much more.
To mark this anniversary, a new update will be rolling out onto the game starting 29 September 2023, which seeks to take players back into the game’s archives to “provide a behind-the-scenes look at the development”.
This update introduces a new [BONUS] menu which comes with an Art Gallery containing sketches from development, a Music Player with the full Cuphead soundtrack, and a Behind the Scenes Video player with a never-before-seen look at development.
Original sketches, concept art, process footage of painting or model work, unused music tracks, orchestra session footage, you name it. Knowing that we wanted to give our thanks to the Xbox community that has shown us love from day 1, we really thought about the kinds of things we would want to see as fans of Cuphead. The goal was to make this update feel like a real peek behind the scenes at what went into bringing the game to life, across all parts of development!

When it comes to the kindness and support the Xbox community has shown us all these years – all the way back to the very first teasers and snippets of Cuphead – no amount of thanks feels like enough. We really consider this update just a small token of our immense gratitude, and hope that everyone enjoys it as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together!
