Originating as an arcade game before later being ported across to the Dreamcast, it has been a while since SEGA’s Cosmic Smash series has received a new release. But rather than bringing the game across unchanged for a new platform, RapidEyeMovers and Wolf & Wood have worked to bring a reimagining of the game to the PlayStation VR2 virtual reality platform under the title C-Smash VRS. That game, is now available to purchase via the PlayStation Store.
C-Smash VRS seeks to bring the slick, minimalist, feel-good racket sports game to the PlayStation VR2 through offering “an immersive full-body VR experience”, and a “high level of physical immersion, gameplay variety and distinct one-more-go quality will provide endless fun”.
The game has the goal of making players feel good. Set in a utopia at the end of space and time, its low-gravity environments will enable you to pull off smash shots against either another player or against NPCs. The single-player ‘Journey Mode’ brings rogue-like progression to a sports game with 100 levels and a host of powerups for you to discover in the remote corners of the cosmos. Alternatively you can play online more competitively against another player.
C-Smash VRS features original tracks by DJ Ken Ishii (Rez Infinite) and synth master Danalogue (front man of The Comet is Coming), seeking to deliver “a hypnotic soundtrack which will make both the game’s dynamic environments – and player’s bodies – pulse to the beat”.
The development team has also confirmed that development of C-Smash VRS will continue post-launch, with what they pitch as “an exciting roadmap planned”, with new modes, features and content to come.
