No More Robots and PanicBarn has revealed they are working on a new 8-bit style comedy open-world RPG by the name of Soccer Story, which is pitched as being about “solving puzzles and saving the world with your trusty magic soccer ball”.
Soccer Story takes place a year after The Calamity™ tore apart the very foundations of soccer as we know it. Since then, Soccer Inc. has made dang well sure that not a soul has been allowed to even look at a soccer ball, let alone kick it. It’s a real Messi situation, no doubt, at least for those who regularly kick soccer balls – unlike myself.
But this is just the calm before the score. A magical football has now chosen you, The Savior of Soccer, and you’ve been tasked with saving the future of the sport, and bringing harmony to the world once more (This sounds like a nightmare to IRL me, but hey, virtual me can get down with the idea). Can you remind everyone why there’s just no substitute for soccer, or will there be a foul ending?
Soccer Story is described as having “goal-oriented quests and side-missions to complete over 15+ hours of gameplay, and a huge range of activities and events to take part in”. You will build your soccer team and do battle against the fiercest teams – from toddlers and old-age pensioners to ninjas and literal sharks. The game will also feature a local multiplayer match mode with a full roster of teams and animal captains.
No formal release date has been announced for Soccer Story as of writing, but the development team are aiming for a launch later in 2022 on the PC, Xbox Game Pass, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Google Stadia platforms.
