One-Winged Angel Sephiroth Joins Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as DLC Character

Announced during this year’s Game Awards, Nintendo took the opportunity to promote that a second character from Final Fantasy VII will appear in their crossover fighting game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Following the inclusion of protagonist Cloud Strife as DLC in the Wii U / 3DS Smash Bros. and eventually being a main playable character in this game, primary antagonist Sephiroth will be joining the battle soon. They are joining the game’s second season pass.

You can watch the announcement trailer above, which provides a combination of pre-rendered CGI cutscenes involving some previously released DLC characters and in-game battle footage. Expect to see another live stream from director Masahiro Sakurai which goes into more detail about this playable character, his release date, and hopefully detailing what sets him apart from other sword users.

Final Fantasy VII is Square Enix’s 1997 RPG which first released on the PlayStation 1. Over the years it has been ported across to a number of platforms, including the Nintendo Switch last year. A remake, titled Final Fantasy VII Remake, is now available for the PlayStation 4. Given the game doesn’t have as much history with Nintendo platforms compared to others, it does come as quite a surprise that now two characters from it make an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
