Sydney’s Lyric Theatre will head down the rabbit hole this September when Cirque Alice, a new circus production inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, arrives for an exclusive Sydney season. Cirque Alice is produced by Tim Lawson and Simon Painter, whose previous productions include The Illusionists, Le Noir, Circus 1903 and Now You See Me Live. Running from 25 September to 11 October 2026, the two hour production brings together acrobatics, aerial performances, contortion, puppetry, dance, comedy and music within a reimagining of Carroll’s fantasy world.
The production draws on the characters and imagery of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, placing them within a circus setting featuring performers from around the world. An original set and soundtrack will accompany the performances, with the music including newly arranged contemporary interpretations of classical works.
Creative Producer Simon Painter said Carroll’s stories provided a strong foundation for developing the characters and narrative surrounding the new circus production.
The tales of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland provide the perfect backdrop to create a magical narrative about a cirque show. Filled with some of the most eccentric and larger-than-life characters and creations, the original stories have provided such amazing inspiration for this groundbreaking new production
Producer Tim Lawson said the production had been created to appeal to both adult audiences and families.
