Full Cast Revealed For Australian Premiere Of The Prom

Date:

The creative team behind the upcoming Australian premiere of The Prom has officially unveiled the full company for the production. Set to be performed at the newly revitalised Teatro at the Italian Forum in Sydney, the musical comedy is scheduled to begin its run in March 2026.

Leading the company is Caroline O’Connor, known for her extensive work on Broadway, the West End, and Australian stages in productions such as Chicago and Anastasia. O’Connor will take on the role of Tony Award winner Dee Dee Allen.

The narrative centers on two young students, played by Sophie Montague and Paige Fallu. Montague, known for Sister Act, has been cast as Emma, a high school student banned from her prom. Fallu, whose credits include Hairspray, will play Alyssa Greene, the head of the student council.

The group of eccentric Broadway characters arriving to assist Emma includes Brendan Monger (Urinetown) as Barry Glickman, Renae Corser (Saturday Night Fever) as Angie, and Brad Green (Bootmen) as press agent Sheldon Saperstein. Thern Reynolds (Evita) rounds out the visiting group as Trent, a Juilliard graduate and cater waiter.

The role of Mrs. Greene, the PTA President, will be performed by Erin Bruce (Priscilla, Queen of the Desert – The Musical). Scott Irwin (West Side Story) has been cast as the high school principal and theatre enthusiast, Mr Hawkins. Meanwhile, supporting the principal cast are Murray Cunynghame as Nick, Ewan Herdman as Kevin, Abbey McPherson as Shelby, and Nina Hurley as Kayley. The ensemble features Isabella Colusso, Rafael Gill, Sophie Gulloch, Kye Hall, Clementine Jenkins, Bella McSporran, Brock Rankmore, Jack Ryan, Sophie Sutton, and Jasper Wind. Siena Bucknall and Justin Sacco have also been announced as swings for the production.

Teatro Co-Founders Nathan M Wright and Andrew Bevis, who serve as co-directors for the production, discussed their deliberate choice of this musical and their confidence in the selected performers:

Choosing The Prom as Teatro’s third musical felt both deliberate and deeply personal. From the outset, Teatro was created to champion work that is joyful, relevant, and unapologetically human, and The Prom embodies all of that. Its infectious energy and its message of love, acceptance, and belonging speak directly to the kind of theatre we believe in and the community we are building. This cast is truly exceptional. What excites us most is the combination of leading artists with emerging voices, performers who are fearless, collaborative, and deeply connected to the story they are telling. It’s a company that reflects the spirit of The Prom itself: bold, inclusive, and full of joy.

The Prom follows four fading Broadway stars who seek to improve their public image by championing a cause. They travel to a small town to support a student who wants to bring her girlfriend to the high school prom, a request that results in the cancellation of the event by local parents. The resulting clash between the Broadway celebrities and the town citizens explores themes of acceptance and unity.

Originally premiering at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta in 2016, the musical moved to Broadway in 2019 where it received seven Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical. It also won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical. A film adaptation produced by Ryan Murphy was released on Netflix in December 2020.

Tickets for the Sydney season are currently on sale via the Teatro at the Italian Forum website.
