Team StarKid has announced plans to bring The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals back to the stage for a new live production, with a Kickstarter campaign set to launch on 26 April 2025. A pre-launch page for the campaign is now live for those interested in bookmarking the project ahead of its official start. A crowdfunding goal has yet to be confirmed.
This remount marks the first return to the stage for the horror-comedy musical – the first in the company’s now long-running Hatchetfield Universe – in seven years. If successfully funded, the production will run between July and August 2025 at the El Portal Theater in Los Angeles, California. A digital version of the performance is also planned, which will first be made available to rent, before being released on YouTube later.
Directed by Lauren Lopez, the upcoming production will feature several returning cast members, including Jon Matteson as Paul Matthews, Lauren Lopez as Emma Perkins, Joey Richter as Ted Spankoffski, Corey Dorris as Bill Woodward, Jaime Lyn Beatty as Charlotte Sweetly, Jeff Blim as Mr. Davidson and General MacNamara and Mariah Rose Faith Casillas as Zoey Chambers, Alice Woodward and The Greenpeace Girl. Following the events of recent years, the role of Professor Hidgens will be portrayed by Will Branner, who previously made his StarKid debut as Max Jägerman in 2023’s Nerdy Prudes Must Die.
This announcement coincides with the release of a promotional trailer for the production, which leaves me somewhat questioning whether this will be a re-performance of the original work or could align with the antics of the trailer and be its own unique production to some extent.
