MJ the Musical has officially opened at the Sydney Lyric Theatre, the latest musical to launch in the country by Australian theatrical producer Michael Cassel Group. This marks the fifth production of the hit show following its Broadway debut in 2022, with successful runs in London, Germany, and a U.S. tour.
Produced in Australia by Michael Cassel in collaboration with the show’s original Broadway producers, MJ transports audiences to 1992, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Michael Jackson’s Dangerous World Tour. Written by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, the musical imagines an MTV journalist and her camera operator gaining access to Jackson’s rehearsal process, aiming to provide insight into the artist’s creative vision and the challenges of bringing his ambitious tour to life. The musical’s narrative features over 25 of Jackson’s biggest hits dispersed throughout it, including Beat It, Smooth Criminal, Man in the Mirror, and Thriller.
The Australian production is led by Roman Banks, who previously played the role of Jackson more than 200 times in the U.S. tour. Banks is joined by newcomer Liam Damons as young Michael, Josslynn Hlenti Afoa as Katherine Jackson, Conlon Bonner as Tito Jackson and Quincy Jones, Derrick Davis as Joseph Jackson and tour director Rob, and Penny McNamee as MTV journalist Rachel.
