Australian producer Michael Cassel Group have locked in some final casting changes for the ongoing final leg of & Juliet, which is now being performed at the Sydney Lyric Theatre until 12 July 2024. While the role of Angelique has been held by Casey Donovan since the inaugural season in Melbourne, perhaps due to her upcoming engagement with Sister Act the Musical, the production needed someone else to close the Australian tour out in that role.
The solution… to cast star of stage and screen Keala Settle in the role, known for her role as Lettie Lutz, a bearded lady, in the 2017 musical film The Greatest Showman and who will appear in the film adaptation of Wicked later this year. She will be performing for a little less than a month from 19 June 2024 until 12 July 2024.
Commenting on her casting in the role, Settle shared:
I am ecstatic to be returning to this incredible show, stepping into this iconic role I had the privilege to play in London. Angelique is bold, sassy and fiercely independent and it’s an honour to be carrying the baton forward from Australia’s own Casey Donovan. I cannot wait to return to this brilliant score and join storytelling forces with this beautiful Australian company, leaving it all on that stage for you, Sydney!
& JULIET reimagines the iconic story of Romeo and Juliet, proposing an alternative narrative where it hadn’t all ended with Romeo, and where Juliet opts for a life of self-discovery and empowerment rather than tragedy. The musical features a range of pop anthems as iconic as her name, with the playlist including tracks such as Baby One More Time, Roar, Since You’ve Been Gone, Larger Than Life, That’s The Way It Is, Can’t Stop The Feeling, and more.
