Opera Australia is once again merging the breathtaking beauty of Sydney Harbour with the timeless allure of West Side Story. For many years now, Opera Australia has been presenting Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour, where they perform famous musicals and operatic works against the stunning backdrop of the harbour – rain or (hopefully) shine. This year, West Side Story is set to return for a four week season starting 22 March 2024 – following its original debut as part of the series in 2019. Audiences can expect an unforgettable experience featuring the musical’s celebrated score, dynamic dance routines, and powerful vocal performances, all under the open sky.
Once again, Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour is set to be more than just the view and a show. It is also set to incorporate nightly fireworks displays, and feature an array of pop-up bars and eateries, catering to a variety of tastes, from fine dining to casual snacks. For example, the HSBC Platinum Club will provide a fine-dining dinner menu before each performance, with beverages accessible before the show and during the interval. Also exclusive for ticketholders is the Qantas Garden Bar, Feel New Sydney Terrace, Southern Terrace and Northern Cantina, all offering a more casual fare, with a mix of dinner, drinks and snacks available for audiences to craft their own perfect night out.
Tickets are still available for the performances across 22 March – 21 April, with prices starting from $79.00 (excl booking fee) and going up several hundred dollars for more premium reserves. To see what seats are available, visit the official Opera Australia website.
The cast of this production of West Side Story features Billy Bourchier (Tony), Nina Korbe (Maria), Kimberley Hodgson (Anita), Patrick Whitbread (Riff), Manuel Stark Santos (Bernardo), Wayne Scott Kermond (Doc), Scott Irwin (Schrank), Joe Clements (Office Krupke), Doron Chester (Gladhand) and a sizable cast of ensemble cast members and standbys for the lead roles.
