With its Australian production set to commence in Perth in just six weeks time, the production team behind & Juliet have today celebrated the increased reach of their new musical, with the show now being performed in four continents worldwide. This announcement comes as the show celebrates its first anniversary on Broadway.
In a significant expansion, & JULIET will premiere a German production at Stage Operettenhaus in Hamburg in October 2024. This marks the first time the musical’s book has been translated into another language. Germany will be the sixth country to host “& JULIET” in under five years, following runs in England, Canada, the United States, Australia, and Singapore.
Originating lead producer Theresa Steele Page expressed her delight at the show’s international reception, sharing:
We’re so thrilled that audiences across the globe have responded to & JULIET in such a big way. I think it’s a reminder that its message and themes are universal, Max’s songs are beloved by all, and the show brings so much joy to people. And we could all use a little more joy in our lives right now.
2024 will also see the launch of multiple tours of & JULIET, aiming to bring Juliet’s story of second chances to new audiences worldwide. The North American tour, commencing in September 2024, will play in over 65 cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington D.C, and Charlotte, NC, with tickets already on sale for Charlotte. Additionally, a UK tour is set to begin in July 2024, travelling across England, Scotland, and Wales and stopping in 29 cities.
As for here in Australia, producer Michael Cassel Group is set to commence seasons in Perth starting 30 December and Sydney from 27 February 2024, with perhaps more unannounced legs of the Australian tour perhaps on the horizon. This follows the show’s Australian premiere at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre earlier this year. Australian producer Michael Cassel has also shared excitement about joining the global amily of the production and the positive reception in Australia:
We are so thrilled to be part of the global family of & JULIET and to share this wonderful, life-affirming production with audiences all over Australia. Audiences in Melbourne were blown away by the show when we premiered there earlier this year, and the response to our announcements in Perth and Sydney indicate we will be seeing the same reaction when we arrive there.
The Australian production features Lorinda May Merrypor in the title role, with Rob Mills as Shakespeare and Amy Lehpamer as his wife Anne. Playing that other half of the star-crossed lovers is Blake Appelqvist, with Casey Donovan as Angélique, Hayden Tee as Lance and newcomers Jesse Dutlow as May and Yashith Fernando as Francois.
& JULIET seeks to flip the script on the greatest love story ever told, imagining what would happen next if Juliet hadn’t ended it all over Romeo, and got a second chance at life and love – on her terms. Juliet’s new uplifting story of self-discovery and empowerment bursts to life through a playlist of pop anthems as iconic as her name.
