Last week marked the 50th anniversary of the late Tina Turner’s hit song Nutbush City Limits, known by many Australians as the song they know the dance moves to but can’t exactly pinpoint when they learnt them. This song is an ode to Turner’s hometown, Nutbush, situated in Haywood County, Tennessee. Half a century later, the song isn’t just remembered for its infectious melody and significant impact on music charts globally but also for giving birth to a dance sensation – especially popular among Australians. Upon its release in the land down under, “Nutbush City Limits” maintained its position in the top 100 of Australia’s single charts for a year.
Originally recorded by the duo Ike & Tina Turner, “Nutbush City Limits” shot to the top of the charts in 1973, establishing an unforgettable presence in the world of music. The song’s captivating rhythm coupled with profound lyrics showcased Turner’s unparalleled talent, rightfully earning her the title of the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Over the decades, the track has become an emblem of empowerment and joy, and can get many people humming, singing or tapping their feet to its catchy rhythm.
With TINA – The Tina Turner Musical currently being performed in Sydney’s Theatre Royal, the company shared the below refresher on how to perform the dance… should you ever experience a Nutbush Moment. As silly as that may sound, it does happen…:
