The Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) has announced that the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, led by renowned trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis, will be returning to QPAC’s Concert Hall on 4 and 5 September 2023. This follows their last series of performances in Brisbane back in 2019. The Orchestra, featuring 15 soloists, ensemble players, and arrangers in jazz music, will be headed over as part of a three day residency – and will perform two different performances across two days.
The first performance, “All Jazz is Modern” will take place on Monday 4 September 2023. This concert sets out to showcase the artistry of the Orchestra, highlighting the genius of jazz masters alongside their original arrangements and compositions. The second performance, “Journey through Jazz,” will occur on Tuesday, 5 September 2023. This concert will celebrate legendary musicians such as Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, and more.
These performances are part of a three-day residency at QPAC, which will also include a dedicated student concert and jazz workshop for secondary school jazz bands and tertiary jazz ensembles. It is exciting to see opportunities open up for secondary school bands to engage with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, rather than just the usual engagement with the Queensland Conservatorium.
QPAC Chief Executive John Kotzas AM expressed delight in welcoming the celebrated ensemble back for a third season, emphasizing the unique take on jazz classics in the two-concert program and the Orchestra members’ commitment to sharing their time and talent with young Queensland musicians.
Not only is the Orchestra once again performing an extraordinary two-concert program that showcases their unique take on jazz classics, but the incomparable Wynton Marsalis and orchestra members are again generously sharing their time and talent with young Queensland musicians while they are here.
