Urinetown The Musical to Kick Start Hayes Theatre Co’s 2023 Season

Welcome in another year of musical theatre with a show that has a rather… distinct name. The satirical comedy musical Urinetown is headed to Sydney at the beginning of next year, with Heart Strings Theatre Co and Hayes Theatre Co announcing a multi-week season to be performed from 11 January 2023 until 5 February 2023 inclusive at Hayes Theatre Co.

In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!

This new production features direction by Ylaria Rogers (Big Fish, Follies) with music direction by Matthew Reid (Oz Panto) and choreography by Cameron Mitchell (Nice Work If You Can Get It, Catch Me If You Can). Set designs come from the mind of Monique Langford, with lighting design by Jasmin Borsovszky and costume designs by Helen Wotjas.

The cast has already been locked in, with the cast including mother and daughter duo Karen Vickery and Natasha Vickery in the roles of Officer Lockstock and Little Sally. Playing Penelope Pennywise and her assistant Bobby Strong are Deanna Farnell and Joel Horwood Max Gamble plays businessman Caldwell B. Cladwell and Petronella Van Tienan plays his beautiful daughter, Hope. Doubling up on the roles of Senator Fipp and Ma Strong is Joe Dinn while also doubling up is Octavia Barron-Martin as Pa Strong and McQueen and Tom Kelly as Barrel and Tiny Tom. Benoit Vari plays Hot Blades Harry, Kelsi Boyden plays Mrs Millennium and newcomer Barbra Toparis plays Little Becky Two Shoes.

Tickets are now available to purchase via the Hayes Theatre Co website or by calling their box office during business hours on (02) 8065 7337. Tickets start at $68.00 for adults and $52.00 for concession card holders.
