The practically perfect nanny, Mary Poppins, is currently touring Australia. The latest Australian tour of Mary Poppins the Musical from Michael Cassel Group, Disney Theatrical Productions Australia and Cameron Mackintosh is now underway in the Sydney Lyric Theatre, and from next month, will be drifting upwards for a season in the Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s Lyric Theatre. But for those who may be eagerly watching the wind changes, the question remains… where will she fly to next?
The producers have confirmed that Mary Poppins the Musical will be headed to Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre starting 29 January 2023 for a “strictly limited season”. For those on select mailing lists, public pre-sales will commence Monday 12 September 2022, with general public on-sales expected a week, if not days, afterwards.
In a role which has rotated state-by-state, the role of both the Bird Woman and Miss Andrew (a new character for the musical) will be played by Marina Prior, who will be returning to Mary Poppins the Musical following its debut Australian tour, where she portrayed Mrs Banks.
The stage adaptation of Mary Poppins was co-created by Cameron Mackintosh, with a book by Julian Fellowes, and original music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman. Much like all of Disney’s film to stage adaptations, although certainly retaining much of the charm that we grew up watching ourselves, Mary Poppins the Musical features new plotlines and I would argue has a more broader appeal to teenagers and adults than their source material.
