Feeling a bit of deja vu with this not being the first time we have received an announcement of SIX the Musical planning to hold its debut Brisbane season, but I guess that is what you get when you factor in a bit of ol’ fashioned time travel. Following their seasons in other Australian states, producers Louise Withers, Michael Coppel and Linda Bewick will be bringing the six wives of Henry VII to the QPAC Playhouse stage, as they reclaim their HERstories once and for all starting 30 December 2022.
For those who have heard the music of SIX the Musical before, there will be no English renaissance style costumes or old’timey music, with their stories instead taking the form of a high-energy, brightly-lit pop concert. Plus with a runtime of 75 minutes, it can be a good option for early night, or late night entertainment.
The Australian production commenced at the Sydney Opera House for a 15-week season, before travelling to Canberra, Adelaide and (currently) Melbourne. This announcement will see SIX the Musical locked in to perform at Perth’s Crown Theatre from 24 November 2022, followed by the QPAC Playhouse in Brisbane from 30 December 2022. A New Zealand tour is still slated to follow. With tourism still limited to at least some extent by COVID-19 (myself being a case in point right now), it is nice to see that the producers have decided to maintain their original plans to bring SIX the Musical to Queensland and Western Australia.
The cast consists of six actors who portray each of Henry VII’s six wives, including Phoenix Jackson Mendoza as Catherine of Aragon, Kala Gare as Anne Boleyn, Loren Hunter as Jane Seymour, Kiana Daniele as Anna of Cleves, Chelsea Dawson as Katherine Howard and Vidya Makan as the “survivor” Catherine Parr. They will be joined on-stage by swings Karis Oka and Shannen Alvce Quan. Other creative talent involved directly in this production include Chiara Assetta (Dance Captain), Cristina D’Agostino (Resident Choreographer / Alternate Swing) and a band including Claire Healey (Music Director / Keys), Heidi Maguire (Assistant Music Director / Keys), Kathryn Stammers (Drums), Debbie Yap (Guitar), Jessica Dunn (Bass) and Ann Metry (Bass).
Tickets for the Queensland season of SIX the Musical are set to go live to the general public on 19 August 2022 at 9am, with those interested in nabbing early tickets encouraged to sign up to THIS waitlist.
