The Theatre Sphere - Photographic Retrospective

When I regained my love of musical theatre in 2014 after being wow’ed by the Australian production of Disney Theatrical’s The Lion King, Matilda the Musical was that other adaptation of a childhood classic that caught my attention, and that I really REALLY wanted to see. In early 2016 I finally got that chance during its inaugural season, and later saw it several more times during its Brisbane season. If the Brisbane season were on longer… I probably would have seen it a few more times.

Following its initial season at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney – the show toured across the country to Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Auckland. Behind the scenes was the Australian and New Zealand producer Louise Withers & Associates, who at this moment are working on Billy Elliot the Musical. The musical itself featured music and lyrics by acclaimed Australian performer Tim Minchin and a book by Dennis Kelly.

The Australian and New Zealand tour of Matilda the Musical featured James Milliar in the role of Miss Trunchbull and Elise McCann as Miss Honey – the latter of which was succeeded by Lucy Maunder during the Perth season. These performers were joined on-stage by a local cast of children, taking on the role of Matilda and her classmates.

Below are some images and video footage I captured during the show’s Media Call in December 2016, ahead of its opening night at the QPAC Lyric Theatre in Brisbane. This season has ultimately concluded already in Australia, and there is no indication of if/when it will return for an encore season.
