Starting to piece together their line-up for the upcoming Spring 2024 anime season, HIDIVE has confirmed that the original TV anime Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night (Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai – 夜のクラゲは泳げない) will be streaming exclusively on their platform starting in April 2024. Set in the vibrant heart of Central Tokyo’s Shibuya City, a hub for Japanese youth culture known for its eclectic mix of fashion, art, entertainment, and nightlife, the anime sets out to offer a unique slice-of-life, coming-of-age ensemble drama.
Directed by Ryohei Takeshita and written by Yūki Yaku, with character design by Junichiro Taniguchi and music by Masaru Yokoyama, the anime boasts a talented Japanese voice cast including Miku Itou as Mahiru Kozuki, Rie Takahashi as Kano Yamanouchi, Miyu Tomita as Kiui Watase, and Miyuri Shimabukuro as Mei Kim Anouk Takanashi.
Shibuya is a city full of identity. It is here on Shibuya’s late night streets that illustrator Mahiru Kozuki, former idol Kano Yamanouchi, Vtuber Kiui Watase and composer Mei Kim Anouk Takanashi — four young women who are slightly outside the world — join together and form an anonymous artist group called JELEE. “I” also want to shine like someone else. If it’s not me but “we” then we might be able to shine.
Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night will make its North American debut with the premiere of episodes 1 and 2 at Anime Boston 2024 on 29 March 2024.
