Demon Slater: Mugen Train Claims #1 Spot in Australian and New Zealand Cinemas

Granted the Australian cinema landscape is still recovering from the impact COVID-19 has had around the world, but the Madman Anime Group are celebrating the success of Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train, which released in cinemas across Australia and New Zealand late last week. Based on weekend box-office sales, the animated feature film claimed the #1 spot across both countries. This success follows on from the Japanese premiere, where it holds the prestige of being the country’s highest grossing film of all time.

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train follows on from the events of the first season of the Demon Slayer TV anime in 2019. The story follows Tanjiro Kamado’s journey as a demon slayer, after everything is taken from him in a vicious slaughter. Now, all he has left is his sister, and she’s not even human anymore.  The film opens as Tanjiro and his comrades embark on a new mission aboard the Mugen Train and are joined by one of the most powerful swordsmen of the Demon Slayer Corps, Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku.  Together, the heroes face a malevolent new foe.

Demon Slayer has cemented itself as one of the all-time greats and these results speak to reach beyond what we consider our traditional ‘anime core’. Demon Slayer is at the forefront of anime’s steady march into mainstream consciousness and is a great jumping on point for those keen to discover the medium.
