A word game from two of the creators of GoldenEye 007 and TimeSplitters has made its way to mobile. Beyond Words: A Word Roguelike, developed by Mindfuel Games and published by PQube, is now available on iPhone and iPad through the App Store.
The game was created by Steve Ellis and Dr David Doak, and it takes the familiar word game format in a more strategic direction. Each run asks players to form words that satisfy a series of board goals, which become harder to meet as the run goes on. To keep up, players combine modifiers, abilities and stickers into scoring combinations, so planning ahead matters as much as vocabulary. Every run brings a different set of challenges. For those who want a change of pace, there are also time attack and seeded run options, along with a negative scoring mode for players looking for a tougher test.
The mobile version has been built with touch screens in mind, with tiles dragged and dropped into place. Runs can also be paused and resumed later from the same point, making it easier to play in short bursts. Beyond Words: A Word Roguelike is a one-off purchase priced at £3.99/$4.99 (or local equivalent), and includes the full game with no ads or in-app purchases.
