Players can now build their own levels in MR. RECORDS. Publisher Wired Productions and developer Glee-Cheese studio have updated the rhythm adventure’s Steam demo for Steam Next Fest, adding a Music Level Editor that lets players design, customise and play their own records.
The editor works on a music timeline, where players place notes, obstacles and effects before jumping straight in to play what they have made. Assets, colours, animations and backgrounds can all be customised, with movement synced to the beat. The update is available now in the updated Steam demo.
The Level Editor will also feature in every version of the full game when MR. RECORDS launches on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. PC players get some extra flexibility, with the option to build levels using their own music and share them for others to play.
At the heart of MR. RECORDS is George, an elderly dreamer who, after a lifetime stuck in routine, finally opens the record shop he has always wanted. Every record he plays sends him on a journey through his imagination, turning into a playable world that shifts and changes with the music. Players run, jump, slide, dodge and chain together well-timed moves across more than 40 handcrafted levels, each set in a surreal dream world shaped by George’s memories, feelings and moments from his life.
The demo covers the start of George’s story as he gets ready to make his dream a reality, introducing the music, the shop’s customers and the beginnings of a record collection in which every album unlocks a new adventure.
The shop itself is more than a backdrop. Its quirky customers come with their own stories and musical riddles, and players learn about each record so they can recommend the right album, unlock new stock and grow the business. Along the way, George’s past is revealed through music, photographs, notes and other discoveries. Some songs are upbeat, while others touch on regret, lost love and the life he never lived.
