Cyclops is on his way to Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, though not in the form fighting game players might expect. Rather than the familiar X-Men leader, the game’s first DLC character is Phoenix Cyclops, a version of Scott Summers carrying the power of the Phoenix Force. He arrives on Monday 2 November 2026 as the first character included in the Year 1 Pass, with Ray Chase providing his voice.
The development team at Arc System Works has seen Cyclops as one of the leading candidates for the game’s roster from early in development. His long history in Marvel fighting games posed a challenge, though. With his look and battle style already well established across those appearances, the team set out to find a way of presenting him that felt different, and the question became a major point of discussion internally.
The answer came from the narrative team, which suggested the Phoenix version of the character. The developers felt this would allow for fresher visuals and a more exciting fighting style, and chose to keep working on him until they believed he added something new to his fighting game legacy.
This Scott Summers is trying to tame a destructive power in order to save mutantkind from extinction. He believes in absolute justice and is prepared to make difficult decisions and take extreme actions when he feels they are needed. To reflect the inner conflict and emotional weight behind those choices, the team deliberately gave him a somewhat younger appearance, set against the aura of the Phoenix Force. His transformed state is intended to show a shift from idealistic leader to fiery corruption. The Phoenix costume stays faithful to its source material, with additional details drawn from the comics, and the team says its main goal was to make him look as cool as possible.
On the battlefield, Phoenix Cyclops is built as an all-rounder, using a broad range of Optic Blast techniques to fight effectively at both long and close range. The Phoenix Force adds wide-area, fire-based attacks that cover large portions of the screen, while his kit also includes projectiles, rushing attacks, throws and setup tools.
His standout mechanic ties those two sides together. Using Optic Blasts builds up Phoenix Force energy in the form of Solar Shards, and once four have been collected, Cyclops can transform into his Dark Phoenix form. The idea comes from the Avengers vs. X-Men storyline, in which Cyclops became one of the Phoenix Five before absorbing his teammates’ power and becoming Dark Phoenix. In the game, the transformation delivers a significant temporary power boost, but it carries risks, including health depletion, so managing that power will be central to playing him well.
Players who would rather see a more traditional Cyclops will have options from day one, with the “Classic” and “Legacy” DLC costumes also available on 2 November.
