To mark the 10th anniversary of the game’s original release, Mafia III: Definitive Edition is now available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with 60 FPS gameplay and other enhancements. The anniversary also brings a separate Steam update, with fixes for mission progression, achievement tracking and display settings.
Originally released on 7 October 2016, Mafia III follows Lincoln through the mob-controlled streets of New Bordeaux in 1968. This anniversary release revisits that campaign with technical changes to improve performance and reduce issues that could interrupt progress.
On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, 60 FPS support extends to many real-time cinematics. Some cinematics are pre-rendered movies, however, and remain at 30 FPS. For returning console players, there is an important catch: eligible owners can claim the new version at no extra cost, but existing PS4 and Xbox One save files cannot transfer to their newer console versions. Continuing an old playthrough on the upgraded edition is therefore off the table.
Owners of physical or digital PS4 copies of Mafia III: Definitive Edition are eligible for the digital PS5 version at no additional cost. On Xbox, owners of the digital Xbox One edition are eligible for the free Xbox Series X|S version. Digital copies obtained through Mafia: Trilogy or Mafia: The Omertà Collection are included. Players should search for Mafia III: Definitive Edition on their console’s storefront and confirm the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version is in their library.
Several PC fixes target specific story interruptions, including reported progression problems in “Get Enzo Conti”, “Kill Tommy Marcano”, and the Epilogue. The notes also address lost achievement progress when you close the game mid-session, subtitle settings resetting at launch, and wiretap map data and junction box functionality being lost after you complete Stones Unturned.
