Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II are now available on Nintendo Switch 2, bringing both of Square Enix’s HD-2D role-playing games to the console as individual releases. These new native versions aim to provide players with improved resolution and frame rates over the Nintendo Switch native version.
Each title offers players a choice between two separate adventures, each built around eight travellers with their own backgrounds, motivations and stories. Both games combine turn-based combat with the series’ HD-2D presentation, pairing 2D characters with three-dimensional environments.
The original Octopath Traveler takes place in Orsterra, a continent of forests, desert settlements and snow-covered cathedrals. Each of its eight protagonists begins in a different location, with stories ranging from personal discovery to revenge. Choosing a starting character determines where players first enter that world and begin bringing its travellers together.
Octopath Traveler II moves the action to Solistia, a separate setting undergoing the changes of a new industrial era. It introduces eight new protagonists and an independent story, giving newcomers a starting point of their own. Alongside its new setting and cast, the sequel adds gameplay features and develops the HD-2D visual style established by the first game.
PC players have another release to look out for later this week. Both games will arrive on GOG for the first time on 8 October, with introductory discounts of 70% for Octopath Traveler and 60% for Octopath Traveler II.
The Nintendo Switch 2 editions are available now, joining the games’ existing releases across Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.
