ZeniMax Online Studios Transitions The Elder Scrolls Online To Seasonal Content Model In 2026

ZeniMax Online Studios has announced a restructuring of the release schedule and monetization model for The Elder Scrolls Online. Moving forward, the MMORPG will adopt a seasonal format. Under this new system, all upcoming gameplay content, ranging from new zones and dungeons to classes and storylines, will be made available to all owners of the base game at no additional cost. This transition begins with “Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk,” which is scheduled to launch simultaneously on PC and consoles on 2 April 2026.

Each Season is designed to last approximately three months and will feature a distinct theme. ZeniMax has indicated that this approach allows the entire player base to access new features together, removing previous barriers that required the purchase of separate chapters or DLC for gameplay updates. To support this model, the game will introduce “Tamriel Tomes”, a system functioning similarly to a battle pass. This will offer both free rewards and optional paid upgrade paths for players seeking additional cosmetic items. A new in-game storefront, the Gold Coast Bazaar, will also be implemented as part of this economy update.

The inaugural season runs from its April launch until 8 July 2026. A primary feature of this period is “The Night Market”, a new “Event Zone” located in the Oblivion realm of Fargrave. Available for a limited seven-week window, this area will require players to pledge service to one of three factions and tackle a gauntlet of PvE encounters. While the zone is temporary, the developers intend for Event Zones to return in future seasons, allowing players to explore different faction paths.

Prior to the start of the season, “Update 49” will arrive on 9 March 2026. This update marks the first output from a newly formed internal team dedicated specifically to player quality-of-life improvements. The initial wave of adjustments includes the ability to respec Skills and Attributes directly from the user interface for free, faster training for Riding skills, and an increase in furnishing limits for at least half of the available player housing. Combat mechanics are also receiving attention. The Dragonknight class will undergo a review involving a rework of core skill lines and a visual refresh of abilities. Similarly, the Two-Handed Weapon skill line is set for a visual update. Later in the season, the studio plans to release a rework of Werewolf visuals, which will include the addition of a female werewolf model.

Toward the end of Season Zero, the developers plan to implement two new systems aimed at veteran players. “Challenge Difficulty” will allow users to opt for a harder version of overland content in exchange for greater rewards. Simultaneously, a “Vengeance PvP Progression System” will be introduced, offering new ranks and passive abilities for player-versus-player combatants.
