Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that the current version of its PlayStation Stars loyalty program will be phased out, with full closure scheduled for 2 November 2026. The decision is claimed to come as part of the company’s broader strategy to evolve and adapt to shifting trends within the gaming community – with this program being released three years ago amidst the popularity of NFT “Digital Collectables”, albeit with PlayStation Stars not incorporating any “Web3” elements.
Launched nearly three years ago, PlayStation Stars offered players the opportunity to earn digital collectibles and rewards by completing campaigns and levelling up through continued engagement. Until 23 July 2025 at 7:59 am PT, members will still be able to participate in active campaigns, level up, and redeem rewards such as points and digital items.
After that date, the campaign and levelling features will be discontinued, and users will no longer accrue new rewards or status benefits. Members may continue to redeem their earned points for rewards until the points expire. Sony also notes that from 21 May 2025, members who cancel their membership will lose any unused points and will not be able to rejoin the program in its current form. However, any previously earned digital collectibles will remain in users’ possession, even after cancellation or once the program concludes.
