Following what has been deemed successful runs in Melbourne, Adelaide and Canberra, Neil Gooding Productions and Woodward Productions, the producers of the one-woman play Shirley Valentine in Australia, have confirmed the production will make its way to Sydney and Brisbane for limited seasons later this year. The production will be staged at the Theatre Royal Sydney from 22 to 25 October, before moving to Brisbane’s Twelfth Night Theatre from 29 October to 8 November.
Starring Natalie Bassingthwaighte in the titular role, Shirley Valentine brings to life Willy Russell’s story of self-discovery and transformation. The play follows Shirley, a middle-aged Liverpool housewife trapped in a monotonous routine, who finds herself reminiscing about her youthful dreams while talking to her kitchen wall. A spontaneous holiday invitation sets her on a journey to Greece where, through humour and determination, she rediscovers her identity and zest for life.
