Capcom is revisiting its storied samurai action franchise with a remastered edition of Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, due to release on 23 May 2025. Originally released in 2002, the action RPG returns with visual and gameplay enhancements, and will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
During the Future Games Show, Capcom released a new trailer for the game which includes commentary from director Motohide Eshiro. The footage highlights one of the remaster’s most significant additions: the new “Hell” Mode. Designed for experienced players seeking a punishing challenge, this difficulty setting introduces instant death upon taking a single hit.
Set in a supernatural version of feudal Japan, Onimusha 2 follows swordsman Jubei Yagyu as he battles demonic forces led by Nobunaga Oda. As with the original release, player choices influence the progression of the story, with branching paths and character relationships playing a central role in the narrative.
Beyond its visual upgrade, the remaster introduces several quality-of-life improvements. These include the ability to switch weapons seamlessly during combat, auto-save functionality, multiple screen aspect ratios, and an expanded in-game gallery featuring 100 pieces of newly added artwork. Players can also skip cutscenes and manually trigger Jubei’s transformation into his powerful Onimusha form.
Capcom is also offering a few incentives for early adopters. Those who pre-order or purchase the “Onimusha 1+2 Pack” will receive the Onimusha 2: Orchestra Album Selection Pack, which includes orchestral arrangements and in-game items. Additionally, players with save data from the 2019 remaster of Onimusha: Warlords will unlock a bonus outfit for Jubei inspired by series protagonist Samanosuke.
