Nippon Ichi Software America has shared new information around the battle system to be featured in Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero, which is set to be based on the original PlayStation 2 RPG but with some modern twists in the mix. Battle System
A Free-Movement Strategy RPG

The game’s battle system is defined by its unrestricted movement, allowing characters to move freely within a radius during their turn. Combat is turn-based, with actions determined by each character’s Speed stat, which players can monitor via a turn order displayed on the screen.
Confine: Transform Objects into Allies

Marona’s ability to Confine allows allied Phantoms to possess objects such as trees, rocks, or weapons, bringing them into the battle. The characteristics of the object influence the Phantom’s stats; for instance, Confined Phantoms will gain defensive power when possessed into a rock but will move slower. Conversely, possessing a weapon will boost their attack power.
However, the strategic depth of this system comes with the temporary nature of Confinement. After a few turns, the Phantom will be Removed from battle, meaning careful planning is required to maximise the effectiveness of each ally.
Confriend: Bonding for Battle

Marona can further enhance her abilities through the Confriend system, which allows her to bond with Phantoms, increasing her stats and unlocking special skills. Depending on the ally she Confriends with, Marona’s appearance and abilities will change, a major change to the original game where her main role was simply as the confiner.
Moreover, by fulfilling certain conditions, Marona can activate “Again!” which allows her to take additional turns and gain significant stat boosts. This mechanic can potentially lead to devastating chain attacks, offering players the thrill of defeating enemies in rapid succession.
Gadgets and Strategic Enhancements

Players can also utilise Gadgets—unique objects that can be deployed on the battlefield for special actions. Gadgets like cannons, catapults, and more to offer new strategic possibilities when Phantoms are Confined to them, enabling a variety of powerful attacks and interactions. These Gadgets can be developed and enhanced at the player’s base on Skullrock Island, adding another layer of customisation and strategy.
Abundant Character Growth and Post-Game Challenges

At Skullrock Island, players can access features such as character creation and the “Awakening” option for character enhancement. Additionally, the “Juice Bar” allows for the transfer of EXP to chosen characters, offering a range of options for both in-depth character development and more casual gameplay.
The game also includes pirate ship customisation and random dungeons, ensuring a variety of post-game challenges and customisation options.
Developed by Nippon Ichi Software and published by NIS America internationally, Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero is launching on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC (via Steam) in 2025.
