Hadestown, the acclaimed West End and Broadway musical, is set to debut in Australia at the Theatre Royal Sydney in February 2025. Tickets for Tony Award and Grammy Award winning musical are now on-sale, following a pre-sale period which was said to be “record breaking”, that an additional week of performances had to be added to the first wave of ticket sales. The musical is being presented in Australia through a collaboration between Opera Australia and Suzanne Jones for JONES Theatrical Group, and is currently confirmed for Sydney only – but watch this space for more updates on a potential national tour.
Originally an indie theatre project by Anaïs Mitchell, developed with director Rachel Chavkin, Hadestown blends modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz. The musical reimagines the ancient tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, intertwining their story with that of King Hades and his wife Persephone.
The production features a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, delivering a theatrical experience that explores themes of industry versus nature, doubt versus faith, and fear versus love. Hadestown invites audiences on a journey to the underworld and back, with Mitchell’s melodies and Chavkin’s poetic vision offering a resonant and hopeful narrative.
