Over the last month or so, Madman Entertainment have been asking their fans to vote for their favourite anime releases from the company (Along with other releases which due to their diversity, most likely won’t make it into this top 20) and giving away on-the-spot prizes to those who provided interesting vote justifications. The intention of this is to generate what fans would consider the companies Top 20 series releases.
After announcing Fruits Basket at #15 on the rankings, #14 has been announced as being Ouran High School Host Club, a series which I reviewed a little less than a year ago getting a solid score of B HERE. The series is now available on DVD and Blu-ray from Madman Entertainment.
Here is what the team at Madman Entertainment had to say:
The concept behind OURAN HIGH SCHOOL HOST CLUB is uniquely Japanese. It sends up the concept of the Host Club and places it within a high school, making it one of the most hilarious and offbeat stories we’ve ever seen and a brilliant satire of Japanese culture – a true Otaku favorite.
The series has a lot of fun with the concept of cross-dressing, a subject that the West would struggle with, which points to one of the great things about OURAN HIGH SCHOOL HOST CLUB and anime in general. It’s able to explore themes like gender and socio demographic ‘differences’ effortlessly. The fact that OURAN does this in a sincere but hilarious way has made it one of your all time favorites at #14.
