Serving as a successor to the enjoyable 2010 action RPG Nier, Square Enix and PlatinumGames have today provided a bit more information on when players will be able to dive into the world of NieR: Automata. Although yet to lock in a specific date, they have confirmed plans to launch it exclusively on the PlayStation 4 in early 2017.
Taking a seemingly different approach to storytelling this time around, NieR: Automata tells the story of androids 2B, 9S and A2 and their battle to reclaim the mechanoid-driven dystopia overrun by powerful weapons known as “machine lifeforms”.
2B, an android described as “cool, calm, and collected”, is the main playable character, and is an all-purpose battle android deployed as a member of the automated infantry squad, YoRHa. She is equipped with a sword for close quarters combat and the “Pod” support system for ranged battle. Her eyes are obscured beneath her standard-issue military visor, which she rarely removes.
Providing a glimpse at the game’s setting and gameplay, Square Enix has recently shared their E3 2016 trailer (Available above). The game’s action RPG mechanics clearly make a return, also attacks have a lot more flair to them than before. A brief scene around the 1:10 mark also confirms that the “bullet hell” style of attacks by enemies will be making a return.
Developed by PlatinumGames and Square Enix, NieR: Automata is set for release on the PlayStation 4 sometime in early 2017. Expect to hear more in the months leading to launch.
