Final Fantasy Tactics Returns with Enhanced and Classic Editions in The Ivalice Chronicles

Reintroducing one of their original flagship tactical RPGs to new (and returning) audiences, Square Enix has announced Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, a modern reimagining of the celebrated 1997 strategy RPG. Set to launch on 30 September 2025, the game will be available across multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Steam Deck.

Bringing together legacy and innovation, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles presents players with two distinct gameplay options. The enhanced edition features updated visuals, a fully voiced script, and quality-of-life improvements designed to appeal to both newcomers and long-time fans. Meanwhile, the classic version faithfully recreates the original 1997 game with the inclusion of the War of the Lions translation, offering a nostalgic experience for those seeking to revisit the game in its original form.

Set in the politically charged medieval world of Ivalice, that would later become the centrepoint of Final Fantasy XII, the story follows Ramza Beoulve, a noble whose true role in the kingdom’s conflict has long been obscured. As players navigate betrayals and shifting alliances, they will encounter complex characters including Delita, Alma, and Ovelia—each entwined in the fates of kingdoms and ideals.

Several key developers from the original title have returned for this revival, including Kazutoyo Maehiro as director, Hiroshi Minagawa as art director, and Yasumi Matsuno as the original script and scenario writer. The enhanced version brings a range of gameplay improvements: fully voiced dialogue, a rebuilt user interface, graphical enhancements, and additional conversations to deepen character development. New mechanics such as tactical view, turn-order confirmation, fast-forward options, and adjustable difficulty aim to streamline the player experience without compromising the game’s strategic core.

Players will also once again engage in turn-based tactical battles across varied terrains, utilising a job system that includes over 20 classes such as dragoon, geomancer, time mage, and summoner. With more than 300 abilities to unlock, the system supports extensive party customisation and progression.

For players opting to go with the ‘enhanced’ route with English voice acting, the world will be brought to life by a cast comprising both new and returning voices from the Final Fantasy franchise. Joe Pitts leads as Ramza, joined by Gregg Lowe as Delita, Hannah Melbourn as Agrias, Timothy Watson as Cidolfus, Harry McEntire as Mustadio, and Ben Starr as Dycedarg. Fans of the Final Fantasy VII remake series may also recognise cameo performances by Cody Christian as Cloud Strife and Briana White as Aerith Gainsborough.
