Independent studio Toadscale together with publisher Devolver Digital has announced that Mycopunk, a co-operative first-person shooter set in a (hopefully distant) fungal-infested future, will enter Steam Early Access on 10 July 2025. The announcement was made during the PC Gaming Show.
Set in a universe where maintenance work is anything but ordinary, Mycopunk casts players as members of the New Atlas Hazard Crew – a group of eccentric robot exterminators hired by intergalactic corporation SAXON. Their task is to investigate and contain a planetary-scale fungal outbreak, all while navigating bureaucratic neglect and corporate indifference.
Described as a low-fi, high-chaos shooter, Mycopunk focuses on mission-based co-op gameplay where players face off against waves of corrupted, fungal-infected enemies. Combat is centred around a variety of futuristic weapons and tools, which can be enhanced through a grid-based upgrade system that encourages players to create unique and often absurd loadouts. Enemy encounters are designed to be unpredictable, with adversaries capable of adapting and scavenging from each other. This dynamic requires teams to coordinate their builds and abilities, fostering both tactical synergy and moments of unpredictable chaos.
Outside of combat, players can socialise aboard a dropship hub area, filled with activities and opportunities to explore the game’s setting. The area also serves as the base for Roachard Cox, a bug-like war veteran and SAXON company rep who offers both guidance and dry corporate commentary.
The developers position Mycopunk as a mix of irreverent humour and strategic co-op gameplay, grounded in themes of exploitation, malfunctioning tech, and makeshift heroism.
Mycopunk will be available in Steam Early Access beginning 10 July 2025. A playable demo is currently accessible for those wishing to preview the experience.
