SEGA to Attempt New Spin on Classic 2D Sonic Platforming Games in ‘Sonic Superstars’

Seeking to provide a new spin on the classic 2D platformer style of gameplay the Sonic the Hedgehog series has offered players since its inception, SEGA has announced that work is underway on ‘Sonic Superstars‘. The game is set to release later this year on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and the Nintendo Switch.

Sonic Superstars begins with Sonic and his friends embarking on an adventure on the North Star Islands. This setting is described as a mystical location with previously unexplored environments and a mysterious story. Sonic and team once again will have to go up against Dr. Eggman who is up to another one of his dastardly schemes, utilising new powers from Chaos Emeralds known as ‘Emerald Powers’ when they are collected.

The game boasts an evolved 2D Sonic platforming experience. SEGA claims they redesigned classic elements to suit current-generation gaming platforms. This includes the introduction of new zones, music, and gameplay, along with modern Ultra High Definition visuals made possible through 3D graphics. The game aims to maintain the familiar feel of Sonic’s movements, physics, and controls to ensure that both recent and long-time fans of the series find it appealing.

Furthermore, players will have the opportunity to play as recognisable characters from the Sonic universe, such as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose. They will face off against their arch-enemy Dr. Eggman and another notable adversary, Fang. Additionally, Sonic designer Naoto Ohshima has developed a brand-new character for players to confront in the game. The Emerald Powers feature allows the playable characters to use the seven Chaos Emeralds to unlock an array of new abilities such as creating clones, climbing waterfalls, and powering up.

With multiple player characters, SEGA will offer support for local 4-player co-op, enabling fans to either play solo or team up with friends to play through the entire campaign.

Expect to hear more information come out about Sonic Superstars over the coming months.
