Cyberpunk 2077’s Long Awaited Expansion Titled ‘Phantom Liberty’, Scheduled for 2023 Release

Let’s be frank. While Cyberpunk 2077 was a decent enough game once the issues and bugs were fixed following its 2020 release, it did not meet the high expectations and hype from many in the gaming community. While further news and information about the game’s future was slow, today we receive evidence that developer CD Projekt Red has not given up on Cyberpunk 2077 and are finally schedule to release their first major downloadable content from sometime next year.

Titled ‘Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty‘, this expansion was unveiled today during a special issue of the studios Night City Wire series, introduced by game director Gabe Amatangelo. While more details are to come, we received some basic information including:

  • V will be returning as the main protagonist, alongside Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand and a cast of new characters who V will come into contact with inside a new location within Night City
  • Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty will be available on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Google Stadia sometime in 2023.

This broadcast of Night City Wire also confirmed the surprise release of Patch 1.6, also known as Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners. This free update is named after the upcoming anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and will feature equippable items seen throughout the show, the jacket worn by protagonist David Martinez as well as a shotgun used by a character from the show.

Outside of tie-in content, the transmog/wardrobe system has now been implemented from any of V’s apartments or safehouses. Players will have the ability to save up to six outfits that can then be viewed and selected from the inventory. Alongside this comes a cross-platform progression function, meaning saves can be uploaded to the cloud and seamlessly continued on a different platform.

With this update also comes the ability to play Roach Race at any of the arcade cabinets throughout Night City. This minigame stars the beloved figure of Roach as she gallops, jumps, and glitches through locations from The Witcher series of games in an endlessly scrolling 2D platformer. Another animal receiving a bigger role thanks to the Edgerunners Update is Nibbles the cat, whom players have already had the chance to meet and even adopt. With this update, Nibbles is now available to pose in Photo Mode. Apart from these features, there are also additional weapons, quests, and some new secrets to uncover in Night City.

Perhaps the most important addition for PC gamers however is REDmod – a free set of tools for Cyberpunk 2077 which adds integrated support for installing and loading mods into the game. It also features an official tool that will help you use, modify and create your own experiences in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, including custom sounds, animations, scripts, and more. This tool can be downloaded from the game’s official website.
