While the anime adaptation did make it to international audiences, the Japanese Touken Ranbu multimedia franchise hasn’t had much prominence outside of its home country. This is all scheduled to change next year, with Koei Tecmo Europe confirming that the first-ever console game in the Touken Ranbu series – dubbed Touken Ranbu Warriors – will be available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch from 24 May 2022. As its title may already imply, this is a spin-off game developed by Omega Force, bringing their trademark Warriors Musou style of gameplay into another already established universe.
Touklen Ranbu Warriors does not feature all the character from the original smartphone game, featuring 15 warriors (or swords) out of the many dozens making up the franchise. This includes, unfortunately, my personal favourite Gokotai – known for his companionship with adorable tigers. Confirmed characters, brought into a 3D environment, includes Mikazuki Munechika, Tonbokiri, Sengo Muramasa, Kasen Kanesada, Ichigo Hitofuri, Namazuo Toushiro, Hyuga Masamune, Heshikiri Hasebe, Yagen Toushiro, Tomoegata Naginata, Tsurumaru Kuninaga, Shokudaikiri Mitsutada, Okurikara, Yamanbagiri Kunihiro and Yamanbagiri Chougi.
In Touken Ranbu Warriors, members of Touken Danshi have been drifting through time without their master – the Saniwa – to lead them, when they are suddenly attacked by the fearsome History Retrograde Army (HRA). After the initial conflict, the Touken Danshi are approached by the Government of the Time, and sent on a mission into the war-torn Sengoku Era where the revision of Japanese history is already underway. Can the Touken Danshi heroes restore order while restoring the original timeline? The fierce but beautiful battles of the Touken Danshi are finally a reality!
